Cheltenham 2023 – Day 3

Mighty Potter (168) looks bombproof in the Turners Novices Chase, based on his Ladbrokes Novices Chase win on the bridle and his Drinmore defeat when putting 19 lengths between himself and Banbridge. He was pulled up after a race stopping mistake in the Supreme last year and I think it was that rather than the track that beat him. He is a brilliant jumper and has a lot of pace. I’d fancy him to put at least 5 lengths to Appreciate It who is best of the rest at 163, while Stage Star (159) could place. Salvador Ziggy has eleven pounds in hand and An Tailliur has ten pounds based on the course and distance qualifier which has the former on better terms. He is the best handicapped horse in the race. He is also claiming seven pounds putting 18 clear. Shishkin (172) is the highest rated in the Ryanair Chase but with his history of problems, the bounce factor from Ascot Chase is glaringly obvious. He has to be taken on and is my lay of the meeting. The problem is finding the winner. Fury Road (169) has a chance and the drop down in trip will suit. Blue Lord (168) is a horse I have always thought a lot of but it is worth nothing his poor finishing at Cheltenham. If that isn’t going to be an issue, he would be the pick. Janidil (169) is the each way ante post pick, having been on him at 20/1. I’d be happy to select him as an each way alternative. Teahupoo (164) and Home by the Lee (164) have both had fine seasons but I would take them on at those figures in the Stayers Hurdle. I have long been a fan of Blazing Khal (169) and I take hi. To beat Klassical Dream (168) who seems to struggle to see out the trip around Cheltenham. I put up Coole Cody to win the Plate last year and off of 143, he’d be 16 pounds well in for a repeat. However, Celebre dAllen is 18 well in and meets Coole Cody on better terms than when fifth in this last year. I’ll put up these two but at 50/1, Celebre dAllen is the nap. My hope is that Henry de Bromhead wins the Jack de Bromhead Mares Novices Hurdle in memory of his ill fated son, and with Foxy Girl an interesting runner. Jetara’s form with the now absent fancy Ashroe Diamond, gives her a big chance though. Beauport was taken out of the Ultima in favour of the Kim Muir and he is 11lbs well in. In a tight handicap, that is a significant advantage.
